GMC Repair: 98 grand am ignition switch, security indicator, accl

Question
i bought a 98 grand am and had to replace the ignation switch. now the car will catch but will not stay running. im told this is due to the passlock system as the theft light on the dash comes on. a mechanic at a pontic dealership told me i need a bypass switch, but now no dealer has heard of such a thing and im told i need it to be re programmed. im wondering if this right, or is there anther way around going to a dealership. ive been told to put the car in accl and leave it for like that for a hour and it will reset the programing but that didnt work. would u have any other ideas? thank you. heather

Answer
Hi
Try this
Time required, approximately 10 minutes.

Insure that the battery is fully charged.
Use the scan tool in order to clear the DTCs.
Turn the ignition switch from the OFF position to the CRANK position attempting to start the vehicle. The vehicle will start and then stall.
Leave the ignition switch in the ON position while observing the security indicator.
When the security indicator turns off, which can take up to 10 minutes, turn the ignition switch off. Wait 10 seconds.
The BCM and the PCM will learn the new code on the next start attempt.
Hope this helps
