GMC Repair: brakes, dust boots, wheel cylinder

Question
I am in the process of rebuilding a front wheel cylinder for my '52 Buick but when I re-assemble it, the center spring keeps pushing the pistons, boots, etc. back out of the cylinder unless I hold them in with my fingers. I notice that when you buy a new one, it doesn't do this. Did I do something wrong or do the stops on the drum brake shoe hold the assembly together? Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer
Hi,Phil

There is a tool that retains the pistons in the cyl for assembly, its available through eastwood restoration products, they have all the tools needed and at good pricing.
Usually the dust boots that come in the kit will retain the pistons,i put the boots one on each finger, using my fingers to keep the pistons and spring in place i then use my other hand to install the dust boots that fit on the cyl itself and then slowly releasing the pistons, the tool makes it alot easier though.if you need more help contact me.Thanks
