GMC Repair: 40 gallon 1987 Suburban gas tank, gas tank, fuel tank

Question
My fuel pump went in my 1987 Suburban.  After I finally got it down, I found a couple of things that I had NEVER seen before.
One, the float assembley was loose from the sending unit.  I plan on just eliminating this by removing it and disconnecting the lead.
Two, there is a plastic tray sitting in the bottom of the tank.
My question is this:" Does the tray somehow connect to the pump?"

Answer
If you disconnect the FLOAT the fuel gage will not work.

The plastic tray is your FUEL BAFFLE of which prevents irratic fuel gage bouncing vis the sloshing of the gas within the fuel tank.

This baffle STOPS the sloshing effect thus stopping the gage from bouncing.
