HI, I have a question regarding my dads truck, 88 chevy silverado. Bare with me i am a woman so I might not be too well with auto-grammar. He needed a new engine, after speaking with a gm dealer he was told to get a 93 350 caprice, he did this. To get more power he was told to add the lt-4 cam. Nothing happened ,said it ran better before he changed it. It was hooked up to dyno, went  300 hp and just fell. Then both head gaskets blew, after reapiring them and adding about 350 more miles he went back in because engien still didn't sound right. He was then told he was supposed to but a "chip" in order for the lt-4 cam to be effective. He purchased this in california and had it installed. The truck still does not run right, he says the motor has a skip in it, it idles very high when the truck is cold, once it is warm it comes down. He took it back again and gm can't find anything wrong. He is very frustrated due to lakc of time and money spent. I found this sight hoping to find answers. Again forgive me if this is a little out of text, Im just hoping maybe someone can give him some insight on what the problem could be. Thanks so much!!

The problem is, Is he should have taken the vehicle to a reputable facility who builds engines. Most GM dealers service departments do not do that many engine replacements and in my professional opinion, He should have installed the EXACT SAME engine in the truck that he took out.

Now you have a DISASTER on your hands and there are no doubt so many problems that it could take alot more money to get it fixed right. That is IF he can even get anybody reputable to do the work.

I can tell you one thing for sure, I would not even consider taking on this never ending project disaster.

Please excuse me for my bluntness, But I have seen this kind of disaster so many times, It still annoys the heck out of me as to WHY people change the original design from that of the manufacturer of the vehicle. It always turns into an endless money pit.

Again, Please excuse my bluntness. Your ONLY hope is to TRY and get a professional engine rebuilder to take on this mess. I doubt that you will find a reputable one.

If it was my truck, I would sell it and get whatever I could for it and buy another vehicle.

Thanks so much for your DEGRADING advice, my father was advised that this would be a good thing to do do his truck, had he known it would turn out a disaster, he would not have done it. I found you not to be blount but rude, not everyone has your car experience and intelligence. I merely wanted reassurance, not to be told in so many words, " how stupid he is".
Thanks so much for your time, and for wasting mine.

WHOA hold on there, I meant absolutely NO DISRESPECT of anykind what-so-ever. You asked me for my 20+ years of dealing with all types of problems and many of which you would NOT believe.

Your Dad made a terribly advised mistakke by changing out the engine to an engine that is NOT designed to be installed into his specific vehicle.

I have seen these types of RETRO-FITS and the countless problems that occur upon installation and the countless problems AFTER installation.

The problems that you are having is EXACTLY why I will NOT change out one size engine for another. It just creates to many problems and to many dollars to get it running correctly and sometimes it runs in thousands of dollars to finally get it to run right.

If he wants to spend twice as much as the truck is worth to get it to run RIGHT, That is entirely up to him.

I just meant that I have seen this type of problem and would NOT get involved as it takes many many many hours of work and LOTS and LOTS of dollars to fix it.

Again, I meant NO disrespect. I was just giving you my experiences with this type of situation.

If I have offended you, I apologize. But I just don't want to see him throwing good money after bad.

My apologies,
