Alfa Romeo Repair: Spider Fan/Water Pump Failure, alfa spider, spider fan

Question
I have a 1984 Series 3 Alfa Spider.  I lost a belt while driving, and overheated very quickly.  I don't recall any squealing before the car overheated, but did notice a great deal of smoke before I could pull over.  Belts had less then 1,000 miles on them so the belt should not have failed.  The engine currently has 100,000, and has never been rebuilt to my knowledge.  The water pump could be original.  I replaced the the belt, but I get a high pitched squeal and the fan does not turn.  I'm thinking the water pump has failed. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Answer
Have the cylinder head retorqued by loosening each bolt 1/4 turn then tightening to specified value starting in the middle and working out.

Those water pumps rarely last more than 60k.  Get it changed and flush the old corroded coolant and put in a fresh 50/50 mixture.
