American Motors: rear axles, amc hornet, piece axles

Question
i have a 1974 amc Hornet. it has a 360 motor. i have modified the motor. it runs 12's in the quater mile. but i keep recking the splines on the axles. im not running slicks either. is there another rearaxle i can put under the car. i was wondering about a 9inch ford or 8.8 ford, but not to sure what would fit if any

Answer
You can install a Ford rear end, but you'll have to do some modifications to the axle tubes for the AMC springs and finding one with the right track can be a challenge.
You can always modify your AMC rear end.
If you're stripping the splines, try having a machine shop cut two 1/4" grooves 180 degrees apart in the axles and the hubs. This allows you to use thicker woodruff keys and should keep the splines from stripping out.
You can also add a weld bead where the axle tubes go into the differential housing. This will stiffen up the rear end.
Or you can contact Superior Axles for one piece axles.
