American Motors: 1982 Scrambler continued, cold look, accelerator

Question
Hi Kevin,

Just wanted to give you more info regarding my black smoke problem... When I start the Jeep cold - she fires right up but runs rough for about five minutes - I'm wondering if I have a choke issue and shes running to rich.  The black smoke tends to be present at all stages though, start up fully warm and gasin it.  thanks again

Answer
You bring up a good point of the automatic choke.
After the vehicle has been sitting and COLD, look down into the carb and step once on the accelerator. The choke valve should close. Start the engine and the valve should open slightly and open completely by the time the engine warms up.
If not, it should be adjusted and replace the choke pull off valve.
