American Motors: best carburetor for 72 javelin, amc javelin, performer manifold

Question
I recently aquired a 1972 304 AMC javelin.  It currently has a 2bbl carburetor.  I want to upgrade the carburetor to a 4bbl, and I am wondering which one i should buy.  Thanks.

Answer
Jay,
If you have a stock 304 or 360 V-8, I would recommend a 600 cfm carburetor with vaccuum secondaries. Holley and Edlebrock make such a carburetor. Edelbrock also makes a very good dual-plane intake manifold called the Performer. Do not use a single plane intake manifold on a basically stock engine. Installing headers (1 5/8") and low restriction mufflers on a stock engine with a Performer manifold, with the carburetor calibrated properly, can substantially increase your performance. Let me know if you have other questions on modifying your engine.
