American Motors: My 1983 Spirit sets too high..., v8 cars, wire diameter

Question
My 1983 Spirit sets too high in the front. I suspect that the
springs may have been replaced as the car was set up to tow,
and apparently was driven by a very heavy person as well. It may
have been hit on the pass, side also during its life.   It is a 4.2
with AC. Were there different springs for v8 cars in, say 1979
and earlier?  The car is aligned and drives ok, just sits too high
in the front. If there were other springs available was it a
difference in wire diameter?  Thanks

Answer
Bill,
AMC used different srpings on 4,6,& V-8 Spirits. Also cars with and w/o AC. Is your car sitting too high in the front, or is the rear too low? Either way, you should be able to find replacement springs. Check with NAPA or another parts store. Springs from Concords, Spirits, Gremlins, and most other post 1970 AMC small cars should fit. (not Pacers) If they are unable to locate the proper springs, get online and check the numerous AMC parts vendors. If you replace the front springs, inspect the lower spring seat. They have a bushing that deteriorates over time. If you have no luck in finding springs, let me know. I know of a place locally that has hundreds of AMC parts cars.
