Audio Systems: DVD player, equipment recommendations, subjective factors

Could you suggest a good, budget DVD player?
What brands would you recommend and what to avoid?

I don't like to make equipment recommendations because there are so many subjective factors in each persons mind.

However, DVD players are very inexpensive and you can buy them for $25 and up or even cheaper at sales and thrift stores.  If you are on a budget that is a good way to go; it it doesn't turn out to be the right choice for you then discard it, sell it on eBay or Craigslist, and get another one.  

Only if you are an audiophile with critical listening and viewing skills are you likely to fully appreciate the higher priced units with golden specifications.
