Audio Systems: Speakers for 2002 envoy slt, stock speakers, car sequence

Question
Hi,
i would like to know what type of speakers GMC used on their 2002 Envoy slt. Reason is i just put in a new radio and amp with sub, and they sound pretty good...was wondering the mark and whether or not it was worth changing them? Thanks

Aris

Answer
The stock speakers are usually not the greatest sounding - if that is what you are saying.  The speakers put in by GM are usually made under contract from one of the many manufacturers that supply oem radio products.  Their own Delco makes some of them, JBl oem division makes many of them and their are many others.  Unless you have a branded system, such as JBL, that was factory installed then you can assume they are of garden vintage.

Replacing them requires a proper size - hole configuration and depth.  And, the best way to find out what will fit is to go to crutchfield.com and walk through their "outfit my car" sequence.  Crutchfield has all the data for what will fit and what will work with your vehicle.  You don't have to follow their recommendations. You can then purchase the speakers wherever you wish.  If you do purchase through crutchfield they will supply hook up diagrams and instructions.

If you want to mount speakers that are not the exact fit but can be installed using a mounting ring or other hardware you can find adaptions at installer.com and other accessory suppliers.

In my humble opinion - unless you are a real audio officionado or serious musicfile - you may be just as well off with what you know have since it is working good.  But, on the other hand if you have a keen ear, spend lots of time in the cabin and really appreciate good sound then it will be worth upgrading.  The cost may be more than you want to spend, however.  Changing out the main cabin speakers for really good ones may cost $400 and up.

Let me know if there is more talk on your mind.

PS: If you decide to replace the speakers here is a hint on getting to the door speakers:
