Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman eager-1 5.0 engine 20, craftsman eager 1, water in the fuel

Question
I'm BRAND NEW to fixing small engines. I'm looking to get to the fuel filter on this model and clean it out. how would i go about doing that?
Basically, it has gas and it starts for about 2 seconds and then dies on me.
Hope you can help.
Thanks,
Brian

P.S this mower is about 6 years old

Answer
Hi Brian,

First, rule out water in the fuel.  Then try to start it while squirting fuel or starting fluid into the carb's intake.  If it starts and you can keep it running by adding fuel, then the carb most likely has dirt, debris or gummed fuel inside.  You will need to remove the carb, disassemble it, clean all the small internal openings and blow it out with compressed air.   Probe each and every hole with a small wire.   Adding a carb rebuild kit wouldn't hurt either.  There is no fuel filter

Let me know how you make out.
