Audio Systems: Amp over heating & blowing fuse

Question
I have a alpine mrv-t500 amp hooked to a alpine swr-1242d sub,
and the fuse keeps blowing & is overheated.

Answer
The swr-1242d is a 4 ohm dual voice coil speaker.  How do you have it wired? Series or parallel.  If parallel, which most car speakers are done, it would be in parallel which would give a 2 ohm load to the amp.

If you have the amp in bridge mode and connected to the above speaker you have overloaded the amplifier because in bridge mode it should have a 4 ohm load.

Therefore, either change the setting for the amp or put the speaker coils in series.

Maybe best way is to go two channel with the amp and connect each amp to one voice coil.

If you DO have the system wired correctly there could be a short in the wiring or the voice coils of the speaker.  You can check with a vom or ohmmeter.  DC resistance should be about 3 ohms for each coil.  If less than that it is in trouble.

Let me know if there is more.
