Audio Systems: Subwoofer coil will breakaway from the coil form, dual voice coil, speaker repair

Question
Hello and thank you kindly for your time and expertise. Sighting a previous question which you responded to: http://en.allexperts.com/q/Audio-Systems-835/subwoofer-work-1.htm  you stated that "It is rare, but sometimes the coil will breakaway from the coil form and will not move the cone when audio is applied." Well as luck should have it... I seems I am in this situation. If this is the case, what if anything can be done? Is it repairable? The sub is a MTX 12" Dual Voice Coil 800 RMS

Answer
Yes, they are repairable. Most large cities have speaker repair shops (they do other things in audio, also) and most reputable manufacturers have a reconing service where you can send them back for repair.

Go to:

http://www.mtx.com/caraudio/contactMTX.cfm

for a live chat with MTX representative. I did not see cone repair service on their web site.

If you google for "speaker repair" and add your city you might find one nearby.  I have used one in Atlanta, for example, and it cost about $20 to have a new surround and voice coil.

Good Luck,
C
