Audio Systems: Peavey bass guitar amp head, peavey bass, bass amp

Question
I have a Peavey Century 120 Bass amp head. Recently it has started making a frequent intermittent shushing /distorted type noise. It is really bad when I crank up the volume.
I have checked it out with another speaker -still the same and tapped on the power amp PCB - no noise. I hope you understand this rather naive explanation.
Have you any idea what this could be. Does it sound like an expensive repair.
Many thanks.

Answer
By PCB are you referring to printed circuit board? Off the top of my head and knowing typical Peavey problems it sounds as if it could be a poor internal contact. Not necessarily on the PCB but as simple as the cheap connectors they use. If you are technically inclined then you can inject signal in different stages to see if it is present. If it's intermittent it may have to be bench tested and brutalized which is what their supposed to do before it leaves the factory. If its in warranty, don't even waste your time bring it to an authorized service station and let them sort it out.
