Audio Systems: Connecting a graphic equalizer, graphic equalizer, power amp

Question
I have a Rotel Power Amp and Control Amp (non-integrated). I would like to buy and connect a graphic equalizer. I know experts don't approve, but I'm frustrated by the acoustics of the room. I had the same stereo system in a previous apt. and it sounded much better. The new room is larger and harsher, wood floors with no rugs, etc. I figure it would be cheaper to buy an equalizer than redecorate. I'd like the softer sound which I had in my previous location, which was smaller and had a thick rug and heavy cloth curtains, etc.  From what I've read, the experts recommend attaching the EQ to a tape input and output. What about attaching it directly to my Power Amp, which appears to have two dual inputs, of which I'm using only one, for my Control Amp. Also, any advice on a good EQ brand under $200?   ---Many thanks,

Pre-amp L&R output to Amp L&R input

Speaker placement and size can also be a contributing factor. Speakers should be placed in closer proximity to where your sitting while listening and away from reflective surfaces.
