Audio Systems: JAMO SUB 650, crossover point, pre amp

Question
QUESTION: Sir, i am buying the JAMO SUB 650 very soon and i am having a wild guess if this will work with my ONKYO TX906 receiver, since it doesnt have an output for subwoofer. if it is possible, how do i go with the connection? furthermore, how do you rate this model? Is it worth having one? thank you and more power

ANSWER: Powered subwoofers have all of the internal electronics to connect to any line output device. In your case you would simply connect it's input to the pre-amp outputs on your receiver. This would allow you to control the volume of both your speakers and subwoofer in tandem. In the event that there are no pre-amp outputs then connect the Jamo to the record outputs of the receiver. You will then only have control over volume of the subwoofer on the Jamo. The Jamo will have a volume and roll off control. The roll off or crossover control is used to set the low frequency point at which the subwoofer operates below which is used to close the gap between your speakers and the sub. Being that your speakers are reproducing a full range signal, you should experiment with the frequency control to limit the over amplification of lows at the crossover point of the sub. In other word turn the control counterclockwise to limit the frequencies to under 100hz.

QUESTION: thank you for your prompt and helpful advice regarding jamo sub 650. i had already purchased the speaker the other day but i just would like to know more about the speaker.
1. would it really be safe to drive the subwoofer (together with my main speakers) considering that it has its dedicated amp already?
2. can i also use the REMOTE SPEAKER LINE OUT of my receiver to connect the subwoofer?
3. what is the safest and ideal CONTROL settings of the sub? and, how far can i go with the volume control of my amp and sub?
4. can i connect a MULTIMEDIA SPEAKER on the LINE OUT of the Subwoofer?
5. lastly, is the GRILL or cover of the sub removable?
thank you for patiently there to help... God bless!

ANSWER: 1. would it really be safe to drive the subwoofer (together with my main speakers) considering that it has its dedicated amp already?

AS LONG AS YOU ARE USING LINE OUTS (NOT SPEAKER OUTS) TO DRIVE THE SUB THERE IS NOTHING THAT YOU CAN DO TO DAMAGE THE SUB. THERE IS BUILT IN PROTECTION CIRCUITRY.

2. can i also use the REMOTE SPEAKER LINE OUT of my receiver to connect the subwoofer?

AS LONG YOU ARE USING LOW LEVEL LINE OUT (RCA CONNECTIONS) NOT SPEAKER CONNECTION

3. what is the safest and ideal CONTROL settings of the sub? and, how far can i go with the volume control of my amp and sub?

THERE ARE NO UNSAFE SETTINGS ONLY ADJUSTMENTS FOR VOLUME AND FREQUENCY. YOU NEED TO USE YOUR JUDGMENT TO ADJUST THEM. YOU DON'T WANT AN OVERPOWERING PREPONDERANCE OF BASS AND YOU DON'T WANT TO OVERSHADOW THE LOW FREQUENCIES FROM YOUR MAIN SPEAKERS. THERE IS BUILT IN PROTECTION CIRCUITRY.

4. can i connect a MULTIMEDIA SPEAKER on the LINE OUT of the Subwoofer?

THAT IS THE CORRECT WAY OF HOOKING UP YOUR SYSTEM SINCE IT PROVIDES THE PRECISE CROSSOVER FREQUENCY TO THE SATELITE SPEAKER. iT ALSO MEANS THAT THE TRACKING OF VOLUME WILL BE BALANCED AT ALL LEVELS
5. lastly, is the GRILL or cover of the sub removable?

YES

QUESTION: Good Day! I am now enjoying the thrill of my JAMO 650 sub after following all your expert advices. I just want to clarify some issues on my previous QUESTIONS as well as your ANSWERS.

After reading the manual thoroughly, i discovered that the other options to connect my sub is to directly hook to my Receiver's Speaker Line Out (to sub's SPEAKER LEVER IN). Questions:
1. will it be safe to follow this diagram? would it be more ideal? because i sense that i am not hearing enough power or loudness coming from the sub...

2. can i also connect the subwoofer to the REceiver's REMOTE SPEAKER LINE OUT contrary to your previous answer on my 2nd question?

3. if you answer "YES" to the above questions, will it be advisable to operate my GRAPHIC EQUALIZER to enhance more the sound of my SUB?

4. can i use a Y-Connector, (instead of using 1 cable) to run it both to the LINE OUT (REC OUT) of the Equalizer going to the LINE IN of the Sub? (this is the present set up i have. Because the Receiver's LO (RO)is already utilized by the EQ and so i have the sub connected to EQ'S rec out.

5. How i wish i could attached a copy of my equipment's manual, especially the diagram (back panel) so you could sketch and show me once and for all the proper connection.

thank you and hope i didn't bother you TOO MUCH....

more powers!

Answer
Essentially they are using a transformer or RC circuit to accomplish this. You may get more level out of it using the speaker outputs but I call it make shift audio. In the audio world no one does this unless they've run out of all options. It is there for people who haven't the option of using line level outputs. If it were a standard then Jamo would not be one of the few sub manufacturers that provide that function. You can experiment and then use your own judgment based on what you feel are satisfactory bass reproduction.
