Audio Systems: how to wire speakers and sub to get max performance, dual voice coil, watts rms

Question
QUESTION: Hi,
I recently purchased 2 subwoofers and an amplifier off e-bay. I’m looking for something definitive on how to connect all this to get the maximum performance. The 2 subs I have are Phoenix Gold RSDC104, 4 ohm dual voice coil, 600 watts RMS. The amp is also a Phoenix Gold RSD-1200 Mono. The specs of this amp are 1200 watts x 1 RMS @ 2 ohms, 775 watts RMS x 1 @ 4 ohms.
I would like to know how to wire the subs and the amp to get the maximum performance. Also to avoid clipping. What equipment I would need extra if any to add to performance. etc. Thank you for your time on this. Greatly appreciated.

ANSWER:  Wire the subs like http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j230/sparky3489/DUAL-PARALLEL.jpg

To avoid clipping, you must set the gain (level) right and never put the 'bass boost' up very much.

There is a link on my blog to a guide to set the gain http://spkrbox1.spaces.live.com

QUESTION: Hi Scott,
Referring to the picture that you sent. If I wire the sub's to that amp in the configuration you described would I be able to get the maximum power out of it which is 1200 watts or would it be 775 watts distributed between the 2 sub's(338 watts each). Based on the specs of the sub's and the amp. Also in one article I read on this site clipping can also occur at too low power. Would I fall in that category. Thanks again Scott.

Answer
The diagram above is ONLY if the amp is 1 ohm stable. Since it's not, the only choice is this http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j230/sparky3489/PARALLEL-SERIES.jpg

This will be 775 watts RMS split between both subs. 386 watts RMS each.

If you set the gain right, you don't have to worry about clipping at all.
