Audio Systems: best amp for my subs, ohm speaker load, kicker cvr

Question
What is the best size amp for my two 12" kicker cvr they are rated at 400watt 4 ohms? right now i have 1000watt amp is there anything i can do to set the amp a little to keep them from blowing?

Answer
The speaker load on your amp should not have an impedance less than that rated for the amp. If so, you will not only cause shut down but over time can do permanent damage to the amplifier.

So, you must go back to your amplifier specifications and check the impedance rating.  Then, see how you have the speakers hooked up and determine if they are the cause of amp dumping.  For example, if your speakers are 4 ohms and they are in parallel they would present a load to the amp of 2 ohms.  THEN: If the amp was rated for 4 ohm loads you would be endangering it with the 2 ohm speaker load.  Is that your problem?  If so, the solution would be to put the speakers in series in order to avoid overdriving the circuits.

Normally, with proper loading of the amp, the safe way to keep the speakers from overloading is to merely turn down the volume control so as not to overdrive the speakers!  In other words, it is a matter of not getting too eager for too much power into the speakers.

If you have further questions, give me the model number of the amp and speakers so I can check the specifications and see if you have a compatible setup going.

Hope this helps you analyze the situation.
