Audio Systems: Reciever turning off, bmw 330 ci, bias circuit

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2003 bmw 330 ci. Just purchased it and it has a Pioneer ACIV-D1 in dash navi unit installed. Thing is after like 10 - 15 minutes, it get really hot and shuts off. I can turn it back on, but takes a minute. Any ideas? Like I said I just bought the car and have no info on the system other than the make and model?

ANSWER: I would look at all of the speaker connections and make sure that there are no shorted wires.  The radio is getting hot because it is working too hard.  The laod is too low (Impedence lower than 8 ohms.)

QUESTION: Thats pretty much what I had figured out through my research and asking around too! Thanks! I most definitly will check the wires. One other question. I guess if the speakers in the car are factory speakers and the impedance is too low (below 8 ohms) would I have to replace them with aftermarket ones that are rated over 8 ohms?

Greatly appreciate your time!!

ANSWER: Not likely.  Most factory sepakers are 8 ohms. It is possible that there is a problem in the radio as well.  Letys just eliminate the simple stuff first.

QUESTION: Ok... Checked all speakers and wiring looks good. Doesnt seem like any wires are chafed or corroded...

Answer
Check to be sure that there is no heat from the engine or anything else adding to the problem.  If not, tehn the radio willneed service to determine why it is overheating. A faulty bias circuit inside the unit can cause this as well.  In order to find this type of problem, the unit will need to be measured under load.
