Audio Systems: car audio, 1000 watt amp, farad capacitor

Question
how do i stop my subs from dimming my vehicle lights and i think it
even takes power from my engine. i have a sony 1000 watt amp with two sony
10'' subs, a sony head unit (240 watt?), and a 1.2 farad capacitor

Answer
That is a good question!  Does it dim constantly or only as the audio power goes up and down with the music?  If it is constant dim (test is to let engine run at idle, then switch amps off and on - no music playing; it will slow the idle speed maybe and lights go dim, but brighten when amps are off but with no music playing).

IF: Lights are dim when engine is idle and no music is playing the amp is drawing too much current OR you have the power cap in backwards OR you have a very weak battery.

SO: Here are the things you should check.
-  Make sure power cap is wired in and charged up correctly.
-  Make sure amp is not drawing too much idle current.
-  Make sure your battery is fresh and charged up to the full voltage.
-  You may need an oversize battery.
-  You may need an oversize, heavy duty alternator.

Hope this helps.
PS: The purpose of the 1.2 F power cap is to smooth out the current demand from the battery and keep the lights from dimming while at the same time giving the amp a stronger and more robust kick on the low bass notes.  So, that is why I urge you to make sure it is wired in correctly; check polarity and charge voltage with a meter.
