Audio Systems: surround sound without dvd, satellite box, sony str de697, external amplifier

Question
QUESTION: I have a jvc hd61fn97. I have a sony str-de697 receiver. both are newer models.
I have surround sound on my dvd, and sat. box and everything sounds great, but I cant figure out how to connect my reciever to my tv to have surround sound when I am using my indoor hdtv over the air antenna.  when i connect the rca's from the aux input on my receiver, i can get just the front two speakers.  I cant get my 3 back speaker and my sub to work. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

ANSWER: Make sure the RCA's are plugged into a video or DVD input to the receiver. Your receiver should have many audio modes (various flavors of surround sound and a matrix mode).

Let me know if that works otherwise I will have to look at the manual which you can also do.

QUESTION: well, as it turns out, i have slots for 10 speakers, with 2 sets for surround, so i just rewired the rear surround speakers to the other slot and it work.  but i still don't understand how the center and sub work, i left them alone.
anyway, thanks for your time.

Answer
Depending on how old the unit is, if it can decode most surround programs it should have either terminals for center and subwoofer or line outputs to feed an external amplifier & speakers. The older receivers usually provided a phantom center in which case any of the coded signals will go through  matrix processing that will only simulate surround sound. You should check the manual and see what systems it's designed to decode. Here are some of the newer ones. DTX, Dolby 7.1, 6.1, 5.1. These systems are discrete meaning that each channel is completely separate. The older systems used various types of matrixes to arrive at a simulated surround  sound.
