Audio Systems: Jammed Multi Disc CD Changer, car cd changer, bmw cars

Question
I have reviwed your posted suggestions to others regarding their jammed multi-disc car CD changer.  I have the same problem in a '95 BMW.  The muti CD holder cartridge refuses to eject and the CD's do not play (I get an ERROR message on my display)

I disconnected power not from the battery (which in my car is under the back seat) but by disconnecting the cable supplying power to the CD changer unit only.  However, it did not reset.  Is it necessary to "reboot" the entire audio system or electrical system in the car to unjam the CD player by disconnecting the battery to fix this?  Is there anything else I can/should try before taking it to a repair shop?

Thanks.  Your guidance is much appreciated.

Answer
Without knowing the specific make, model and year of the car and cd changer it leaves me guessing, but normally when the cartridge gets stuck it is a technical job that requires pulling it apart and getting inside to find out what is wrong.   The problem could be mechanical, such as worn or bent guides, friction in the engaging mechanisms, foreign object stuck in the works, etc.  Could also be electronic defects in the control circuits that operate the controlling circuits.

If the unit is a '95 model and an original changer it is most likely  time to just replace it.  Repairing units that are more than a few years old is often counterproductive.

It may help to reboot the entire system especially if some of the electronics is in the head unit.

They have replacements for BMW cars if you decide to put in a new one.  There are other possibilities at places like www.crutchfield.com.

Hope this helps,
