Audio Systems: sub wont put out when amp has power, rca cable, speaker terminals

Question
hey i just hooked up my stereo and my amp seems to be getting power fine but there is no output through the sub, i accidentally cut one of the RCA leads when i was wiring but have rewired it back together, could this affect the carry of my sound?

Answer
You could either replace the rca cable or check it with an ohmmeter (for those working on cars I highly recommend you buy the little vom at Walmart for $9.83; it is a perfect instrument for checking voltages and continuity on such problems).

With the vom you could check to make sure that both 12v lines have power.  If you think the rca cable is properly repaired it could be the speakers are not wired up properly.  To check for that, disconnect both wires at the amp speaker terminals, then using the vom in ac setting see if there is fluctuating output voltage (it will fluctuate with the music).  Then check resistance reading of the wires to the loudspeakers.... This should lead you to the problem area.

Good Luck,
