Audio Systems: Adding a Sub, impedance, fuses

Question
hi there,  My friend just gave me a new sub that I want to put in my truck.  I already have a 1000 wat amp and a 12" sub, I have tryed to hook up the new sub but when i plug in the new sub it works untill I turn the sound up and then the fuses keep blowing out on me!! it is a 10" sub that i am trying to add .... i dont know if that would cause a problem or not.  Is there anything i can do?

Answer
I must know the make and model number of the amp and the speakers, especially the one you are adding in order to give you a specific reply.

Probably, you have overloaded the amp with a load that is too low in impedance.  You must know the impedance of each speaker and the rating of the amplifier to make sure it is not compromised.

And, could be, also, that the added speaker is just causing too much current draw from the amp. In such case, the fuse will need to be increased.  But, if the fuse is already at the suggested rating for the amp it would be wise not to increase it as it could cause damage.

Meantime, check the wires for any shorts or touching at the terminals.

Let me know more.
