Audio Systems: vr-507, sony hd tv, matrix mode

Question
I was given this audio video surround receiver with 6 channels from my brother in law.He bought the Bose system. Any way I have no clue how to hook this up, to my Sony HD TV. that runs off my DVR receiver that comes from Direct TV. I really just want to hook up surround sound only. Is this possible.

Answer
You should connect the stereo outputs of the TV to the Video inputs of the receiver.

How old is the surround sound receiver that you were given? Most of the new surround sound receivers are furnished with the ability to auto sense what signal it needs to decode.

If it's older and you are not really that concerned about the accuracy of reproduction then you can either choose to listen to the receiver in a matrix mode which will simulate surround sound without the accuracy of the intended signal split or you can check the receiver menu to see if it will decode the precise signal you are feeding it. Watching DVD you would need to look at the back case of a DVD or if it's Direct TV, check the listing of programming. For example: DTS, Dolby 5.1, Dolby 7.1, etc.
