Audio Systems: Installed stero in 1958 chevy delray, pelican rapids mn, lighting circuits

Question
QUESTION: Hey my name is David im from Pelican Rapids MN...... i have a 1958 chevy delray that we installed a almost all Boss adio system into.... we put 2 5 1/4" in the back and 2 3X6 in the front... or at least they are to the best of my knowlede... with plans to install 2 6X9's and 2 12" subs run off a amp....... and for a head unit we used a bos mp3/cd receiver with detachable front panel usb and and aux-in (534ua) is the item num.....

Ok so we hooked it up to the 4 speackers installed and put hooked up all the power wires and hooked the 12v constant to the cigert lighter i think... or it might have been the accsiory... i dont know for sure i wasnt the one doing that... but we had it all working and it sounded good and everything was working fine we put it threw its paces playing a cd and radio...... but then i turned on the car and the dash lights didnt come on... so i turned the dash light nob to get them on and as soon as they come on there was a craclin noise and then there was no sound..... but the head unit still shows that it is playing... like the sound bars still go up and down to the beat of the music... even though we cant hear the music that is playing no matter how loud you turn it up........ my friend who is a mecanic and who was the one helping me install it made sure the ground was good witch we feel it is.... and we cannnont figure out what is wrong.....i dont want to have to replace anything becuse we spent over 300 dollers for the system along with 9 hrs installing it so far... with more to go... so please if you have any ideas ill try anything... THANK YOU.... please email me back becuse i doubt ill check this site for answers... thank you agian.. and i hope you have a good idea

ANSWER: Are you running a power amp after the head unit? If so, seems you have the power line mixed with the lighting circuits.

Best to run new wires directly from the battery through a hole in the firewall and an in-line fuse to power the head and the amp/sub.

Since this is a custom jobe and an old car, you may have to pull the electronics out and bench test them to make sure they are good. Then, go back and double check all the wiring for shorts and bad or injured insulation. I know it is a lot of work, but it must be right or you will damage something.

It does not sound like a ground wire problem, but a power wire connected to a wrong point.  As above, the constant power should find its way directly to battery and the turning ON wire to the ignition.

Good luck,

QUESTION: 1 more thing.... the head unit turns on and like lights up properly but there is no sound from the speackers...... and like the lights where on... its just when you turn the nob the lights for the dash get briter and when i turned them at the last second when they got the brightest thats when the speackers cut out.... but im not just finding out that the amp wires where connected to the stero but not the amp and that might have shorted it out like if they touched or something.... does that change anything?

Answer
You have a major miswiring and you should resolve it before you do damage to the electrical system of the car and/or the amplifier.

See my previous reply about the two 12v lines to the amp and sub amp.

I think you are feeding the wrong 12v to the amplifier; the main power line must come directly from the battery somehow, not from one of the light circuits.

Keep looking.
