Audio Systems: Amplifier, inch kickers, ohm versions

Question
Hi, I am planning on ordering three 2007 12" Kicker L7's.  I currently have a Hifonics BXi 1606D amp, but that is not enough power to fully push the subs, so I will buy a different one.  My favorite brand of amps is Hifonics, so I was wondering if you had any advice on which Hifonics amp I should buy, and also whether I should get the 2ohm or the 4ohm subs. Thank you.

Answer
The 1606D is entirely adequate for the 12 inch Kickers.  They are rated at 750 watts.  The Hifonics you have is rated at 1600 watts into a one ohm load.

SO: If you put the three woofers in parallel (the 4 ohm versions) you would end up with 1.3 ohm loading.  That is a good match.

If you wanted a little reserve power to handle the gut vibrating low end you could up the power a little by going to the 2006D. It would be a little safer and avoid overdrive distortion at high power settings BUT it will not play enough louder to make a substantial difference.  WHY? Because it takes about 2 db increase in output acoustic level to be able to detect it by ear.  But, 3db requires twice the power input.  So, going from 1600 watts to 2000 watts is only about a 1.5 db increase in output sound level.  So, you can decide based on that.

If you have the budget, you may do better to buy another 1606D and connect two 12 inch kickers to each amplifier.  That would be awesome.

Let me know if you have further thoughts.
