Audio Systems: remote headunit installation, custom autosound, sight location

Question
Hi Kelly,
Is it possible to install an after market headunit with the faceplate inside the passenger compartment, accessible using the remote control, while installing the remainder of the headunit in a more secure( out of sight) location elsewhere in the car? Detachable faceplates are great but I am in and out of my car constantly throughout the day and it becomes somewhat of a nuisance. I would like to mount just the faceplate in a location where the remote can still work but the faceplate can not easily be seen. The faceplate would then require some kind of connection to the remainder of the headunit, which could then be installed entirely out of sight. I hope to adapt the strategy that if thieves can not see ANYTHING that indicates an upper end headunit is in my car then they won't have any motivation to steal it. The factory radio attracts very little interest and I would like that to be the only visible audio component. Is there any to run a connection between the faceplate and the rest of the unit? Thanks Dwight

Answer
Yes, custom autosound manufacturing makes units that do just what you want. You can also mount the head unit in your glovebox, and leave it open only when driving.
Or, just use a Scosche Bluetooth headunit with an ipod, or hack up a factory unit to cover your radio opening when parked.
