Audio Systems: 2001BMW316 ph7050 6CD Changer, laser diode, equipment failure

Question
Hi Cleggsan, my CD player was working up until last Saturday. I took out the CD magazine from the boot and put in a new CD, I replaced the magazine and slid across door as I've done many times before. When I got into my car and tried to play the CD the error "NO MAGAZINE" came up on the display. I then tried to take out the magazine but when I press the green eject button it doesnt come out. There's a small click when the button is pressed so there is power getting to the unit but then nothing happens, have you any idea whats wrong and how I'd fix it? Would I have to bring it to a dealer or would I be able to do it myself? Thanks Paul

Answer
Try removing and reinserting the magazine to see if it will clear.  Try different cds, also.

Sometimes the lockup is from corruption of the soft codes inside the unit. But, other times it is a failure of some component, either mechanical or electrical.

To clear a soft corruption you must remove total power from the unit for 20 minutes or longer.  You can do this either by pulling the power lines from the unit OR just lifting the bonnet and pull the big cable off the 12v battery terminal (which will turn off everything in the entire car).  However, if this unit has anti-theft feature, you must have the anti-theft code or you will not be able to get it to turn on again.  So, beware of that.

If the reboot procedure does not correct the problem it may be the laser diode is too weak and going bad OR the magazine is bent, warped or somehow defective. You will have to evaluate that. In the case of equipment failure you may need  to get a tech to work on it. In the worst case the entire head unit may need to be replaced.

Maybe this will help or lead you to a solution. But, let me know if you need more.

Cheers,
C
