Towing Issues: Riding WIth tow truck driver, tow truck driver, tow yard

Question
What is the rule in CA?  Where is it found?

Answer
Joe, I really do not understand this question, but will give some guidelines here.

First of all there is NO LAW that says a tow truck driver has to take customers with them. That would be up to company policy and also is at times dictated by the Insurance company who insures the tow company...

Now generally a tow truck will take a customer or more as long as they have seatbelts enough for everyone in the vehicle. Also add in the factors of possible special needs for handicapped or disabled persons.

Now if you are asking if you can ride back to the tow yard after your car has been towed from Private Property, that generally is reserved for only the customer who owns the vehicle being towed. Again there is the insurance issue there.

And as much as I hate to say it there are other factors which tow truck drivers take into consideration when allowing customers to ride with them while towing vehicles...  Drunk, abusive, unclean, plus the legal issues of possible accusations of misconduct or sexual harassment, and then there are also contacts with law enforcement agencies which might prohibit riders in the tow truck, are just a few issues which come to mind... Personally I do not allow for customers to ride with me if they insist on having dogs or other animals ride in the truck. Its my truck and animals have a habit of getting excited while riding and especially in a strange vehicle. I consider the safety factor there..

Riding in the towed vehicle, well that does have a law in California but that is about the only law dealing with riding with the tow truck driver I know of.
