Question
Cleggsan, what's your thoughts on speakers in the ceiling?  Also what's the best way to run wiring out of the walls, is there some type of fitting or manifold to use?

-----Question-----
Hi Cleggsan, I'm finishing my basement and would like to rewire for surround sound etc.  I'd like to possible hook up my TV to separate speakers say in the ceiling etc. Is it best to have the TV and Stereo together and speakers say in the ceiling?  I don't quit know where to run my wiring and I'd like to get started on this because it's hanging me up.  Also is there any particular wiring for audio I should use?  Thanx for any help or additional ideas.

Stereo amp/rcvr should be close to the tv so the coax cables can be no longer than the standard 3 feet or so.  You can run speaker wires as far as you need - within reason.

If you use good zip cord wiring you can run 50 feet or so with no deterioration of sound quality.  Use 16 gauge wires; that will do fine.

Let me know if you need more.

Answer
I do not favor ceiling or wall mounted speakers.  Why? Because they generally do not sound as good as speakers properly mounted and installed in a properly designed box.  Also, they are fixed in their location and cannot be easily moved about if you decide to change the room decor or change the seating configuration, etc.

For low wattage amps the wires can just be run in a fashion that is easy to install. You must, of course, be careful not to pinch them or get them caught between nails or screws or something that could cause a short or other condition.

If the power is quite large such that the voltage is over 25v coming out of the amplifier (200 watts or so) you should run the wires in conduit of some kind in order to comply with many building codes around the nation.

But, mostly, unless it is a really sophisticated, high wattage system, you can just lay the wires down; hide them as you need and have a good time!

Hope this helps.
