Audio Systems: an xmas present, set ups, priority 1

Question
hi! so i'm looking for some advice. i have a 1972 standard beetle and my bf has a 1973 standard beetle. both of us are suffering sadly because we have no music in either of our cars! (however, it makes for good time to talk...)
anyhow, i'll have to replace my dash soon anyhow, but i was wondering if you could recommend any speaker "set-ups" that would give a good quality sound (as both of our cars have stingers...) but be user friendly and we could install ourselves. i don't want to tear apart the doors, but i know how to build boxes and what-not. but ultimately, simple is the best.
thanks in advance!

Answer
apparently the 72 and 73 beetle had 4" speakers up front and 2 sets of 6x9s? This is according to crutchfield and they're usually not wrong from what I've seen,  this is alot of speakers for such a small car.  so even though I'm not a fan of 6x9s and I always bash them, and I know someone's going to read this and say "how come you told me not to get 6x9s but you told this guy to get them..) there isnt much space up under the hood of that car for a sub and 4 6x9s would make a nice amount of bass to fill in for those little 4"s up front. only problem is that on crutchfield's site they say that "some vehicle modification is nessesary" which could be extreamly simple but they dont exactly say what it is. I see it that you have 2 main options.  Both include of course getting an aftermarket cd player (this should always be priority 1 with a car system)  goign to www.crutchfield.com and filling out the "find what fits my car" section can help you with that (and the rest of the equipment) then, recomendations:
1 is to change out the 4" speakers in the dash with GOOD 4" speakers like these:

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-V0htMndC5SH/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?wm=fp&I=107DB400&g...

crutchfield states that they are a direct fit so no modification nessesary.  Leave the factory 6x9s in the car and in the head unit fade the 6x9s down so the majority of sound is coming from these 4"s and add a sub under the hood.  I'm sure you'll be able to make something fit.  a good sealed 10 will be small enough and with the right amp would provide plenty of bass.  I can help make recomendations with this part as well if you like.

The other option would be to get the same 4"s up front and 2 sets of good 6x9s like these:

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-V0htMndC5SH/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=400&I=1089613I

crutchfield's offering them buy 1 set get a 2nd 1/2 off!
Then you'll need a good amp to drive them all.  now what you get for amps is a good question.  you basically have 6 speakers so you could get 6 channels of amplification (3 2 channel amps, 1 4 channel and 1 2 channel) or you can team up all the 6x9s on 2 channels since they're the same type of speaker.  you could get this amp to run all the 6x9s:

then you could run the 4" off the head unit or get a small amp like this:

http://www.cardomain.com/item/POWOV2300

I recomend the amp since it will give you the ability to highpass the 4" speakers which will allow them to run alot louder without distorting and blowing up.  they'll take alot more power this way too so dont worry about the 35 watt rating on the 4"s

Let me know what you think.
