Audio Systems: Fluorescent Displays, electrolytic capacitor, harmon kardon

Question
Hi
Hope you can help. I have a Harmon Kardon 'Festival 60' shelf stereo (AM/FM w/ RDS display, & 7-CD changer and 50w/50w amp).
It has an elaborate, multi-line alpha-numeric fluorescent display. Many of the characters have dimmed in intensity, with some bright and clear and others washed out or dim. One day it was bright and consistent, the next time I switched it on, this problem appeared. I've noticed this in other people's gear, but it was usually pretty old or had been abused over the years. Mine is neither old nor abused.
Can the fluorescent material inside the display 'characters' be revived or brightened by a service technician, or does the whole display unit have to be replaced.
This is a 7 year old unit so parts are a challenge now.
Otherwise, it works great.
Any ideas?
Thanks much.

Answer
all the one's i've seen ended up simply ended up either failing solder connections at the display itself, or by tracing back the end pins on each end back to a failing electrolytic capacitor in the power supplies area of power circuit board. without seeing the unit, i can't really point something more specific for you, but it's normally the soldering first that fixes them....
