Audio Systems: amp speaker setup for 2000 honda accord coupe, honda accord coupe, quality amps

Question
First off, thanks for the affirmation on the amount I spent on my
system. A part of me hasn't been able to enjoy it completely
because of the thought lingering in the back of my head that I
paid way too much.

Answering your question about the sub, I forgot exactly what
kind he has, but i know that it's a high-end sub , that can handle
quite a bit of power, because a mutual friend of ours gave it to
him after he totalled his car, and he was into waking up
neighbors.  The thing was pretty damn loud for a single 10.

Thanks for the advice on the OV2 520 amp. I think I'll go with
your suggestion.  I knew there had to be a lot of good quality
amps out there for under $100, but I wanted the peace of mind
in getting him one that a reputable source could recommend
from experience.

Thanks also for the suggestion on the alarm.  It sounds like a
great product, but I think I'm going to go ahead and get him the
amp, front speakers and the head unit, and pass on the
suggestion about the alarm to him and have him purchase it
himself if it's something he wants.

Once again, thanks for everything. You've saved me a lot of time
and money with all your great suggestions.  Take care, and I
wish you all the best.

Question -
Thanks for the great advice.  I think i'll go with your
recommendation and get the new head unit and hold off on the
6x9's.  The only thing is that he's had an experience when he
caught some ten year old kid in the act of breaking into his old
car to swipe his head unit. The kid ran off before he had a
chance to pull out the stereo, but he left him with a broken
window.  After that incident, I think he's been hesitant  to put in
a new head unit in his current car. I also don't think he's aware
of how much of a difference in sound quality it'll make.

I'd like to get him a JL audio Clean Sweep, so he wouldn't have to
change his head unit, but I couldn't afford to buy that in addition
to the amp and speakers.  So I'll probably just get him the head
unit and tell him to make sure to make it a habit to remove his
faceplate this time.

I think i'll also go with your reccommendation on the Polk audio
components.  I heard some the other day and they sounded
pretty nice.  I"m still unsure about what kind of an amp I should
get for his sub.  Would you have any recommendations for a
decent mono amp to power a single 10 in a ported box?

I wish i could've consulted you before getting the setup in my
4runner a couple months ago.  I'm happy with the way it sounds,
but I have a feeling i paid too much for what I got.  I got  a set of
MB quart discus components, a 10w3 JL sub in a custom
enclosure that they built into the wall where I had a cargo
compartment, 2 JL amps: 250/1 and 300/4 and a JL audio clean
sweep to sweeten up the sound on my factory head unit. I just
wanted good clean sound, while keeping a stock appearance. Do
you think $2000 was too much for everything including labor?

THanks again for all the great advice!!

Answer -
No problem, Glad to help! ok here's a few more recomendations.
I wouldn't get something like the clean sweep unless you have a
car like the mazda M3 where you cant change the cd player cuz
it's odd shapes and has no display other than the one that shows
other car functions.
If he's worried about it being stolen maybe a nice combination
for a birthday present would be a new head unit and alarm!  I
LOVE the crimestopper LCD systems like this one here:

I have them in my cars.  They are security, remote start, keyless
entry, everything all in one.  and the remotes page you up to 1/2
mile away if any sensor goes off in your car.  I think this one
comes with the motion detector so it will even go off if
someones too close to your car!  I have mine set so that if you
get close enough to look in it chirps at you!
They're a bitch to install but well worth it when done.

as for the sub amp and speakers, maybe make that christmas
presents!  well, I dont think you told me exactly what sub he
has.  if is the average run of the mill 10 in a ported box you can
get away with almost anything.  beleive it or not I actually like
power acoustik's gothic series amps run bridged mono for this
on a budget. I have the OV2 520 running a sealed 12" infinity
beta in my friends jeep and he loves it! (300x1 at 4 ohms for
$85!!!! on ebay including shipping!!!!!)
as for chaning out the 6x9s point blank, 6x9s suck!!!! if you
want me to explain I can go on all day about that one!!
concentrate on the fronts only
and for your system being $2k?  not too bad wheneve you opt
out of doing it yourself you're always going to spend alot more
and that's not outragous what you spent.

Answer
no problem!  and thanks for the feedback, most people just take the advice and run and I never get much satisfaction for doing this.
As for the power acoustik ov2-520 amp, it should be a great match for almost any 10" sub.  Keep in mind though that Power acoustik are not a high end company.  I dont see anything wrong with them and think they have the best bang for the buck out there. hopefully your friend isnt weird about brand names and stuff.  before you get the amp though we really should find out exactly what the make and model is of that sub.

Good luck!
