Audio Systems: Microphone, shure sm 58, shure sm 57

Question
Hey, my friends and I are in a band and we want to have vocals, but we are not sure what type of mics and equipment we need.  We also want mics for our horns, but the most important thing is the vocals.  Do you have any advice?
P.S.  We are practicing in my basement so we dont need high quality equipment.
Thanks
Dan

Answer
Mics:
Shure SM-57 for instruments.
Shure SM-58 for vocals.
The accepted workhorses of the industry will suffice for practice and you will not need new mics for live gigs or recordings. Anything else is just not going to cut it for most people. They are not terribly costly.

Mixer/efx:
I would recommend a powered board like a Peavey 8-12 channel setup. They have everything built into one box including the power amp... perfect for small sessions and practices.
If you want effects onthe sounds, look into Alesis, Yamaha and Rane

Speakers:
You would still need speakers.
Get some that you can afford but I would advise to spend as much as you can on those.
Speakers by Peavey and Alesis are well known for their bang for the buck performance.

You can go in debt on Mackie equipment but it will not make you a better musician.

Your question is rather vague, so the answer has to be as well..

Sincerely,
Jerry Mael
