Audio Systems: Stereo speaker wire, dual voice coils, kicker speakers

Question
I want to install some new kicker speakers in my 2003 alero but when I removed the factory speakers there is four wires attached to each speaker. Each side is connected both with positive and negative x 2. The new speakers i have only have one positive and one negative. How do I wire the new speaker with four wires. In the car right now the 4 wires coming from the stereo go into an adapter and connect to an adapter on the speaker which then runs one red and one red and black wire to one side of the speaker and the again same on the other side of the speaker. Can you please tell me what I am suppose to do. Thanks

Answer
The allero was available with a "premium" sound system that has 6 speakers and the speakers you are refereing to are suppose to act like subwoofers for the car.  they have dual voice coils so the extra set of wires is to run the extra set of coils in the speakers.
typically its very difficult to PROPERLY modify these "premium" systems.  They typically have amplifiers and speakers in the car that are strange ohm ratings that dont work well once the speakers are replaced, typically trying to repalce just one component (speakers, or amp or head unit) results in poorer performance that what the car had before.  The best way to deal with these systems is leave them alone or gut them complelety and start over.
My recomendation to you would be first to check the ohms of both the coils on that speaker using a meter (well, one at a time of course).  if the wires run them in parallel then divide the ohms the meter shows by 2 (based on your description this is what it sounds like).  your replacment speaker really needs to be this ohm rating as well.  if you replace these speakers with higher ohm speakers they will end up being quieter.  if you replace them with lowwer ohm speakers then the factory amp will distort and overheat, and may be damaged.  measuring the ohms and doing the parallel or series calculation will tell you what type of speakers you need.
In all honesty I truely believe that simply replacing just these speakers will not give any better sound at all.  the amp will need to be changed as well before the speakers sound any different/better.  this is a much bigger job and most likely will require replacing ALL the speakers and should include changning the cd player which will probably result in loosing some features like chims and things that come through the stereo that most new cars have.

Let me know where you want to go with this, now that you have all this new information.  I'll be happy to help you in any way you want to go with it.

Good luck!!
