Audio Systems: 2001 Subaru Forester single CD player, subaru forester, single cd player

Question
I thought I would have to install a double din unit. Isn't the 2001 Forester's radio ( It's a combination CD/Cassette/Radio type)a double din type? Can the CD player be separated from the cassette player? - Joe

Question -
The factory installed CD Player(which I'm not sure what make it is)in our 01' Forester only seems to work when its cool to cold outside(40 - 50 degrees). Sometimes on a cool morning you may only get 3 to 4 songs out of it before it spits out the CD and then continually ejects it everytime you attempt to put it back in. Could heat be a playing factor and if so, how can I correct it? Let me know asap. Thanks!

Answer -
Yes, heat can be a trouble maker, especially if the cd player is marginal in its settings and alignments.  They are very sensitive to anything that moves the optical pickup system out of its correct settings.

The trouble, quite honestly, is that the cost of repairing them or recalibrating them is often greater than the cost of a new unit.

Since the unit is already 5 years old, it seems to me you may want to replace the head unit with a new one.

You can buy an aftermarket replacement unit that will fit your car for around $99 and up.  The best place to search for one that is compatible with your vehicle is

www.crutchfield.com

If you decide to purchase it from them, they will supply you with the correct wiring harness, mounting hardware and instructions on the removal of the old one and the installation of the new one.

Or, you can go to an installer and have them do it for you.

Hope this helps.

Starting at below $79.95 - and up. (But go on their site and make sure this is the right car).

Answer
The subaru came with a wide opening and a narrow opening; depends on which one you have in your car.  If you go to crutchfield.com you can select for your car and get the ones that fit your opening.

But, the answer to your question is yes, you can get one with both if you want to pay extra money.  But, who uses tapes anymore?  In fact, who uses cds anymore.

The big rage in car aftermarket now days is a unit with iPod docking or mp3 player plugin.  These can hold a lot more than a cd changer and are small, light and can be pulled out - you take them with you when you leave the car.

If you are an iPod user, that is the way to go.

Good Luck,
