No, I don't have a separate amp...

Question -
My 1993 Ford Explorer has an after market stereo - I don't used
the CD player but I do listen to the radio all the time-

Starting yesterday, the radio starting shorting out...  Funny thing
is that it still turns on and off and the clock still works, it's just
that I don't hear anything... Then, all of a sudden the radio
comes back on, only to short out again-

Any quick fix ideas on what might be wrong?  A fuse problem
perhaps? I don't plan on having the vehicle much longer, but I'd
like to still be able to use the radio until I put it out to pasture...

Thanks for any input...

Answer -
It sounds like there is a problem with the amplifier.
Most stereos have the amplifier integrated into the stereo in the dash so this would mean that theres something going wrong inside that unit.  If you have a separate amplifier somewhere in the car there may be a bad connection there or a failing component there.
If you dont have an amplifier it couldnt be a fuse or bad power wires to the cd player because it would go out as a whole, not just the sound portion, the display would go out as well.
There is a slight possiblity that a speaker wire has a short in it and its getting against metal which is triggering the amplifier inside the cd player to go into protection mode (shuts off the amplifier to avoid damage)

Tell me wether or not you have a separate amp before we try anything else.

Answer
well most fords were available with a "premium" sound system and would have a factory amplifier either in the trunk or dash. if you can find that and bypass or fix it that may be where the problem is.  you may have a short in a speaker wire somewhere but that will be hard to find.  you can try putting the stereo on and opening and shuttting the doors and banging around where the wires would be (floor board runners).  does the sound cut out or come back completely randomly or does it seem to be during large bumps you go over?
