Audio Systems: olds cutlass radio swap, olds cutlass, cutlass supreme

Question
Kelly, I am installing a Factory am/fm/cd player from a 91 or 92 Cutlass Supreme into a 94 Cutlass Supreme that came with a am/fm/cass. All of the harness connecters are the same, but the 7 pin that goes to the steering wheel controls is wired different. My factory harness is black, unused, purple, gray, unused, blue, green. The cd player is blue, unused, black, white, red, unused, white. My old cass is black, unused, blue, white, unused, green, yellow. Can you tell me which ones to swap or how to find out? Will I mess anything up if I just try swapping the wires around? Thanks in advance for your time and knowledge. Kurt

Answer
I have never tried to change the steering wheel controls, year to year. You can't really hurt anything, it just works, or not. Most systems rely on different resistence, and or different voltage. Try testing with the old cassette deck first, make good notes, before cutting anything. Look for your 5 Vdc feed wire, it should come from the radio to the controls. Sometimes taking the controls apart can give you clues as to how they work.
