Audio Systems: 2003 Honda Accord Stereo, depot radio, blown speakers

Question
Thank you for the quick response.  The noise does sound similar to an engine running and I have yet to test reving the engine when the sound goes off..  It is a loud murmur (almost like a deep base).  At first, I thought maybe the speakers were blown (though we do not usually raise the volume above 15), but after experiencing the same sound when I slammed the trunk with the car/stereo on, I suspect there may be a loose wire or something else.  It is 100% factory system, with no additional components.  I do not know which manufacturer.  I would hate to have to pay for a service call, if it is something simple to correct.  Thanks again!!

Hello:

Recently the stereo in my 03 Accord has been acting up. When the volume level hits 16+, a loud dull noise takes over, whereby I have to turn off/on the stereo and lower volume.  The same noise occurs when the radio is on (could be less than volume level 16) and I open/close the trunk.  With the car running and radio on, once  I slam the trunk closed, the same loud/dull noise takes over.  Any ideas on what the problem is?  Thanks!!!

sounds like maybe you have a bad ground connection.  Does the "loud dull noise" kindof sound like engine noise in the speakers?  does the sound change with reving of the engine and actually sound like the engine?
Is this a 100% factory system or are there some after market parts?  CD player, amplifier, etc.  if factory is it bose or infinity or basic?
Thanks!

Answer
If the sound goes with the engine reving it's either a bad ground or bad connection, possibly inside the unit.  blown speakers wouldnt sound like this.  you can fix a bad ground by finding some solid metal as close to the cd player as possible.  it must be welded or screwed to the rest of the metal frame, it cant be in plastic.  drill a hole in it. sand all the paint off around the hole.  get a small ring terminal and wire (home depot, radio shack etc.) and screw it into the hole. Use a machine screw with a nut on the other end so it can never come loose (again home depot).  remove the stereo and find the current ground wire (test with a meter, probably the black one) cut the old ground and attach the new wire to where you cut going to the stereo. Make sure you dont cut it too close the the stereo, you'll need room on it to strip the wire and attach your new wire.  attach with a wirenut (orange), or soldering, or butt connector (all available at home depot) sorry it's hard to explain, if this doesnt make sense let me know.
If that doesnt make a difference there's probably something wrong inside the unit.  dont pay for a service call if it is, just buy a better new cd player like alpine or whatever brand you preffer.  I can help with this as well.
Good luck
