Audio Systems: Yamaha HTR5730 5.1 only 3 speakers play, dsp modes, channel speakers

Question
I have a Yamaha HTR5730 stereo system which when I play dvds or cds ,No matter what mode its playing under 5.1,just the Lf, Center, Lsurround, and SW play! You can not hear certain pieces,EX.guitar solos, openings, etc. When I switch modes such as ConcertHall,Jazz, music video,TVtheater,Movietheater, etc,a different combo of speakers and sometimes only 1 will be playing! Never all 5 + SW. NOW,when I play the vcr through the tv or vhs tapes they all play!Ive checked the speaker connections, read and re-read the manual but nothing! HELP Im about to smash the stereo to bits!

Answer
Dear Matt,

Have you gone into the receiver's on-screen speaker set-up menu for the DVD and CD options? Generally, in receivers like yours each audio (and video) output, even to the same set of speakers, has to be individually programmed. You have to designate that when a CD plays, for instance, you use the front channel speakers and the sub. Ditto the DVD player.

BTW, engaging the DSP modes will only worsen the problem, since they often only use selected speakers.

If you've done all this, and you still don't get results, I suggest having the unit checked out by a qualified repair service.

Good luck. And thanks for choosing allexperts.com!

Kindest regards,
