Audio Systems: center channel speaker, mirage omnisat, center channel speaker

Question
I just want to know if you can just use a center channel speaker just to listen to the stereo. I had 2 large speakers before and just want something small to use to listen to music.

Answer
Dear Michael,

As a rule, no--at least not in stereo. When using Dolby ProLogic to listen to music, the algorithm creates an output for the center channel speaker, which is, as far as I can tell, not simply a combination of the two stereo signals.

There are two ways to approach your problem. First, set your output to MONO and direct all the sound to the center channel speaker. Do this through your receiver's audio menu. Second, which I would recommend, is to get a set of small speakers for music playback. There are a number of excellent small speakers for your application. I've had success with the Mirage OmniSat Micros. They're $99 each, and deliver an expansive sound field out of three speakers when you're listening to music with Dolby ProLogic.

Good luck. And thanks for choosing allexperts.com!

Kindest regards,

Kevin
