Audio Systems: installation of factory radio, volvo radio, alpine radio

Question
Im not sure what the factory wires look like...or however many its supposed to have...but i just looked at it now and it has one big bundle of colorful wires that has a plastic square at the end. I looked in my car where the radio goes and there is a wire that is also colorful and it looks like it would fit right it. there is also a yellow wire on the radio that has gold metal at the end. im not sure if there are any other wires that are supposed to be there...
thanks again! Hayley

Hey kelly. For my sweet 16th i got a new alpine radio from car toys in June to go into my 1987 240GL volvo wagon. Unfortunately in november, someone else liked it too so they broke into my car and stole my radio and speakers. Since i still live in the same area and my parents dont feel like replacing it, i have decided to put back in the default volvo radio and speakers. a radio is better than no radio! Anyways, i was wondering if you could lead me step by step how to install the volvo radio and speakers back into my car. the theives left all the wires in. Thanks so much

Do you still have th efactory plugs that go in the back of the factory stereo? With them it;s a simple matter of matching wires. If iyu don't check with an auto salvage, they should be able to sell you the right plugs cheap. One idea, get an ipod with fm transmitter. Theat way you can take it with you when you leave the car, and it plays in any car you use.

Answer
If the plug in the car fits the radio, great! Go for it.

If the plugs were stolen, have a pro reinstall it.
Most shops can do a job like this very quickly. They can also  bench test the radio first to make sure it works before installing it.
The wires on the OEM stereos did not always match the car harness colors. The yellow wire probably hooked up to memory, possibly sharing the wire that powers the cig. lighter.
