Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman tiller, shift rod, steel ball

my tiller transmission seem to have locked up do you have any suggestion model 917.293490. My problem began when my shift rod hairpin clip broke. When I replaced it it would not shift properly.

From this Page you can View Diagrams and Parts Lists for you Equipment Using the "View Sub Components" Section Near the Bottom Left. Select the Transmission Sub Component File.
>>From your Description it Sounds like the Steel Ball (#10) or the Shift Shaft (#16) is Worn and Requires Replacing or there is Something Binding Inside the Transmission.
