Audio Systems: Speaker noise 2000 Mustang, pioneer head unit, ford mustang

Question
my friend has a 2000 Ford Mustang with the mach stereo system, but he has since installed a pioneer head unit and ever since has caused a shrill, quick whistle sound that increases in pitch over 1 second at the most... whenever the car is turned on and power is fed to the head unit. Do those speakers have some kind of self powered amp possibly causing this? I havent looked into running new wires staright from the head unit to speakers, but please let me know if you know of a simple fix for this. Also, he has alternator noise coming in on all speakers. Im not sure how the Head unit is grounded (harness vs. chassis) but what should we look into getting if that isnt the problem? Thanks for the insight!

Answer

It may have amps at each speaker, or it may be configured in other ways. I have never done a 2000 Mach, but my experience says no matter who makes it, factory stereo systems are just substandard these days when compared to aftermarket ones (especially in longevity). This means that, IMPO, it should all be replaced or at least be upgraded/replaced (in stages) in a manner that suits the Machs' design and his goals as an owner..

At any rate..Without knowing its' specifics, I would really have to see that one in person as I am sure it is rather complex once you look into it closer. I do know that I would look very closely before I modified it even one bit (for [what are to me] obvious safety reasons, among other things).

Sadly, I cant help with the noise issue for the same reasons.  Really need to see that one live.. One could chase loops of grounds for weeks the way it sits.

Seems the main culprit is the head unit and its' interface to the Mach. He could very likely damage something the way it is installed currently. It could lead to a short and a fire. Do not laugh, I have indeed witnessed the charred remains of good intentions with wiring before.
IMPO, he should remove that head unit even if it means using nothing. The cost could be the entire car.... maby just a few hundred dollars worth of amplifirs.. who knows, and who WANTS to, eh?

As to any additional suggestions:
You might want to try some of the gearhead ford forums audio sections.
He could hire a pro-installer that can do this in person for him (anything is then possible as to interfacing what exists now).
A zealous novice could do the full replacement with few emails. ;)
Unfortunately, either way will lean into his wallet.

On a lighter note.. I did just find this
http://carstereohelp.net/wireharness_Ford1.htm
S'posed to be for the mach 6 system w/subwoofer.. may be of some use.

Note what it proclaims about cutting wires ect at top :)
