I have an apline factory stereo in a 2001 land rover disco 2. It took on a small amount of water due to a sunroof leak. It is now not working. I have checked all the fuses that I am aware of, including the one in the back of the radio. they are all ok. Is there a relay or something I am missing? Or is the radio toasted?

Thanks!

Mr Gill,

Try removing the radio and either bench test it yourself or have it bench tested. This will tell you if it is the radio (or the vehicle wiring) and  it is the next logical step in Localization/Isolation of the problem.
This procedure should give you a correct answer as to what is actually in need of attention (the radio or the vehicle).

Thanks, Jerry. I appreciate your quick response. What is a bench test, and how do I go about performing one?

Answer

Benchtesting is testing the unit out of the car or while it is 'not installed' in a vehicle. To some people this means taking it into a  radio shop (or their basement..ect), while for others it means hooking up the unit at the battery of the vehicle (directly, but fused) to test the unit only.
Ultimately, benchtests require a stable 12v dc power source (with enough amperage rating to power the desired unit), some wire and some speakers (and perhaps an antenna when testing FM/AM).
The idea is to power it up without using the cars radio harness to see if the radio itself works or not. You can also test all of the speaker outputs (if it has any) with one speaker by swapping the speaker output wires around to each channel while it is 'on the bench'.

Sadly, I do not do have the time for 'walkthroughs' on troubleshooting basics, as my expertise offered here is primarily for advice and consultation.
