Audio Systems: 1998 Dodge Ram Radio/Cd Problem, ram diesel, factory radio

Question
Hi Tom,
I replaced the factory radio/tape unit in my 1998 Dodge Ram Diesel with a used factory radio/cd unit.  (The replacement unit was from a year 2000 truck, removed shortly after purchase and stored).
Installation was straight forward and took about 10 minutes - unconnecting and re-connecting the plugs at the back.  Everything worked perfectly, and I turned the ignition off.  When I turned the ignition on again, there was a display showing on the radio and the cd was playing but all controls - volume, balance, am/fm switch, etc. were inactive, including the power switch.  Turned the key off, but there was still a display showing.  I disconnected the battery to "reset", and after reconnecting and turning the ignition on, everything worked perfectly again.  I turned the ignition off.  Started the truck the following morning and no display on the radio/cd unit at all - completely dead.
? Any help much appreciated.
Thanks,
Al

Answer
Al,
Please give me all the model numbers off the sticker/s on the stereo, I will look over the service info for the stereo to see if it mentions this problem. The problem sounds like a common reset fault with the stereo.
