Land Rover Repair: Freelander died wont restart. Code P606, processor failure, scott lyons

Question
Hi John,
My wife was driving home on the freeway yesterday when the 2005 freelander quit on her. It had half a tank of gas in it.  She said that it was hard starting that morning but did eventually start and really reved up after it did for a very short time (shocked her).  None the less, she drove the car for a half hour, parked, later went to start it again and said it was hard starting again but did not rev up again.  She drove on freeway about 20 minutes when the car acted as if it was running out of gas.  she pulled over and it died and would not start up again.  by the time I got there 20+ minutes later it would barely start but as soon as you gave it any gas it would die.  did this maybe 3-4 times than just flat would not start.  Towed it to a friends and checked the fuel pump which I assume was working since it had plenty of fuel pressure. Checked the pulse to the injectors and the pulse to the spark plug coils.  There was no pulse at the ignition coils than checked codes and found P606 ECM/PCM processor failure.  Please advise.
Thank you,
Scott Lyons

Answer
Hi Scott,

could it be water ingress related?  Here's a website that discusses the possibility that water can cause the ECM to fail:

http://www.myfreelander.co.uk/Electrical/elecprobs2.htm *

Otherwise, it could be an electrial short within the harness to the ECM, the ECM itself, or a problem with one of the many sensors
(ie. crankshaft position, camshaft position, MAF).  The problem is that the P0606 usually indicates trouble within the ECM.

You may want to have this tested out with the correct diagnostic equipment (testbook).

* It's a great site to bookmark too!

Best of luck,
