Audio Systems: advent speakers, advent speakers, loose wire

Question
I have a pair of old large advent 2-way speakers. Lately I get a large noise like static which comes out of one of the tweeters whenever volume is being adjusted. Sound is perfect before and after volume adjustmentjust affected while volume is changing. Any idea what would cause this?

Answer
Dear Paul,

Most likely you have a loose wire/connection between the crossover and the tweeter. Unscrew the tweeter enclosure from the face of the speaker and check for a loose or disconnected wire. Reconnect/tighten the wire. That should do the trick.

If the wiring at the tweeter is okay, then there's something loose at the crossover. If you're feeling good, you can try and access that, but you have to go in either through the woofer or the access panel behind the terminals, indeed if there is one. If you don't feel you can handle that (again you're looking for loose wire), then a hi-fi fixit shop can do it in just a few minutes.

Y'know, I love the old Advents, but they're, well, old. Speaker technology has come light years since they were made. Have you considered upgrading? If so or if you'd merely like to hear some options, let me know.

Good luck. And thanks for choosing allexperts.com!

Kindest regards,
